Catenary Hose Deployment

TOTAL E&P - Catenary Hose Deployment

Background

Total E&P UK awarded Cadherent the contract to design a range of lifting and hoisting solutions to enable safe deployment of three high pressure catenary hoses, that would connect the TSV Borgsten Dolphin and Dunbar platform during the Dunbar Phase IV drilling campaign. Following a successful working relationship with the Total and Dolphin project teams, Cadherent were further employed to assist in authoring the deployment procedures and lift plans as well as providing onsite support throughout the project execution.

Engineering Design

The environment and layout of the structures presented a number of engineering challenges. Achieving a successful hook up without incident required the design, engineering, fabrication and installation of a number of bespoke solutions. Working closely with the Total Structural Integrity department, Cadherent provided a concept to completion service that incorporated a multi-position winch foundation, davit frame, underdeck sheave assembly and a various spreader beams. The use of in-house 3D laser scanning equipment and systems ensured that complex installations could be completed despite limited space and as built data.

Documentation and Technical Procedures

With the benefit of project familiarisation Cadherent were tasked with co-authoring the deployment procedures and lift plans alongside Total, Dolphin and Stork. The work scope complexity and manpower required during the deployment meant that the documentation formed a critical project milestone. To aid onsite communication a 3D animation and over a hundred 2D storyboards were prepared by our in-house design and multimedia teams. Both products were rolled out to all deployment staff ahead of commencement of operations, helping ensure a safe and successful operation.

Onsite Support

As part of Cadherent’s remit, a team comprising of a Project Engineer and Surveyors, were mobilised to the site to assess the design criteria and oversight installation of equipment over an eight month period. Working closely with the team on the Dunbar ensured that each solution had an informed design that could be installed and tested successfully prior to the hose deployment. During the project execution Cadherent provided onsite technical support ensuring that deployment procedures were adhered to and any field issues were promptly resolved.
